On August 19 evening, the 72-year-old Communist leader has been admitted to AIIMS due to a chest infection. At first, he was taken to the hospital’s emergency department and later shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
As per reports close to a party source, Yechury had gone for a checkup following a high fever, and was then admitted due to pneumonia. “He is undergoing treatment and his condition is improving,” CPI(M) said in the statement dated on August 20.
Yechury had recently undergone a cataract surgery.
On August 22, CPI(M) had released a six-minute video from the hospital on his social media platform X paying condolence to former Chief Minister West Bengal Buddhadev Bhattacharya.
It’s my loss that I was not able to physically attend this memorial meeting and pay my homage to Com. Buddhadev Bhattacharya.
It’s most unfortunate that I had to connect from AIIMS to convey my feelings, emotions & revolutionary Lal Salaam to Buddho da ✊🏾 pic.twitter.com/Etz9pVBXgn— Sitaram Yechury (@SitaramYechury) August 22, 2024

Chidambaram and played an important role in forging the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2004. He serves as the General Secretary of the party since 2015.
