When West Bengal CM was speaking about State’s development and investment opportunities, a member from the audience intervened and asked her to name specific investment proposals worth “lakhs of crores” that she claimed West Bengal had received. As Banerjee began to respond, other members in the audience stepped in, urging the questioner to stop, stating that the event was not a press conference.

Following, she was encountered questions about the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata, and asked Chief Minister about her government’s handling of the incident, demanding a response from her.

Though the sudden protest left the audience in shock, Banerjee managed the situation well and responded to the questions raised by protesters with civility. She has also held up a black-and-white photograph from August 16, 1990, showing her injuries and bandages following a violent attack by CPI(M) supporters at Kolkata’s Hazra crossing.

Regarding the RG Kar rape case, the Chief Minister stated that the case was “sub judice” and it was with the Central government. “Do not do politics here,” she told the protestors.

Though the sudden protest left the audience in shock, Banerjee managed the situation well and responded to the questions raised by protesters with civility. She then said that she is a believer in unity. “I am for Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isai. I am for all. I am for unity. You people are not,” Banerjee said.

When protestors tried to raise their voices, she said: “Don’t disrespect your institution by insulting me. I have come here as a representative of the country. Don’t insult your country.”

The event continued despite the disruptions. Following the event, Students’ Federation of India (SFI-UK), issued a statement on social media taking responsibility for the protest.
