Supreme Court Dismisses Petition Seeking Exclusion Of Caste Enumeration In Population Census

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 20 rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) petition that sought the exclusion of caste enumeration in population census.

While hearing the plea, a Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi observed that government has to know how many people are backward class etc. The court pointed out that the issue lies within the policy domain of the government and the court cannot intervene.

“Whether census should be caste or not caste based is a policy decision,” the court said.
