Derek O”Brien, the Trinamool Congress MP, questioned whether the Bharatiya Janata Party is really into the Women”s Reservation Bill, in adherence to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath”s remark on the same bill back in 2010. Mr. O”Brien raised his remarks during a debate on the Women”s Reservation Bill in Rajya Sabha.
The TMC MP questioned the sincerity of the ruling party over the bill by quoting UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath”s remarks on the same bill. He also added that “you can build new buildings, but first at least change your mind-set”, allegedly referring to the new Parliament.
As per the report, the UP CM allegedly said that, “People in air-conditioned rooms in Delhi cannot decide public policy. This Bill will drown the Indian political system if it goes through. If men develop feminine traits, they become Gods. If women develop feminine traits, they become Rakshas (devil). Western ideas of women”s liberation should be properly analysed in Indian context”. Mr. O”Brien claimed that he is quoting the UP CM”s words from media.
Mr. O”Brien remarked that, “All the struggles and oppression faced by women is not because of women. It is because of men and their outlook towards women”, referring to the BJP MP involved in sexual harassment against women wrestling champions of the country. “I do not wish to waste time on the former wrestling chief”, he added.
Congress leader K. C. Venugopal also quoted Mr. Yogi”s remarks on Women”s Reservation Bill. He also reminded the BJP about how ironic the party sound as they gloat about passing their attempt to empower women when the PM kept silent for three months as women were paraded naked in Manipur. He said, “you are talking about women empowerment. Women are paraded naked in Manipur and the PM did not utter single word for three months”. Mr. Venugopal also reminded the interim government about how in the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme it swallowed 80% of the allowed fund for the publicity and utilized only Rs 156 crore out of the 848 crore.
The Women”s Reservation Bill is passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. As per the bill, 33% of seat will be provided for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. Mr. O”Brien also urged the BJP government to bring Women”s Reservation Bill in Rajya Sabha as well.
