Following the call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi inquiring about the flood situation in Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister deputed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to assess the flood situation in the affected region. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK. Stalin during the telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Modi had asked for “immediate financial assistance” to overcome the twin calamities- the cyclone Michaung and the flood.

Nirmala Sitharaman has reached Tamil Nadu today to assess the situation of the flood-hit districts. The minister also held a review meeting with the Thoothukkudi district administration

Chief minister Stalin shared the update about the visit of the Union Finance minister in his post on the X platform.

Stalin said that the Tamil Nadu Finance Minister, Thangam Thenarasu, Thoothukkudi member of parliament (MP), Kanimozhi and the other senior officials briefed the Union Finance Minister about the current situation of the flood-affected areas and the relief works undertaken by the state government. Emphasising the urgency for financial assistance, Stalin said the officials and the state finance minister handed over a “comprehensive 27-page memorandum” underscoring the critical need for funds for the restoration and relief purposes.   “They handed over a comprehensive 72-page memorandum underscoring the critical need for funds in response, relief, and restoration efforts,” Stalin wrote.

The chief minister further pointed out the inadequacy of the funds available under the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and said that the damages caused by the back-to-back calamities exceeded the “current resources.”

Stalin ended the post with a request to the Union Government for “substantial assistance” to confront the “unprecedented” challenges that the state is facing now.

“With only limited funds available under SDRF, the damage far exceeds the current resources. Tamil Nadu earnestly seeks substantial assistance from the Union Govt to confront these unprecedented challenges,” the chief minister penned.

Highlighting the challenges that the state went through, Stalin said that with the second-largest coastline of the country Tamil Nadu remains under constant threat after weathering 50 cyclones in the past century. After the devastating Cyclone Michaung, the state”s recent rainfall in the southern districts added more woes, causing large scale damages.
