"Worried?": Cartoonist MANJUL Slams Mumbai Police For Requesting X To Remove His Content

Mumbai: “This is the only work left for Mumbai Police now,” writes disgruntled cartoonist MANJUL, after Mumbai police requested the microblogging platform to remove a content from his account.

MANJUL shared the notice sent by the X legal team informing him regarding the legal request from police about his account, claiming that a cartoon on his handle violated the law of India. In the notification, the X team pointed out that they have not taken any action on the reported content at present after the request from the police.

The X team also shared reported content the user, with close to 300k followers, posted on his handle on December 20. The cartoon showed a caricature akin to Home Minister Amit Shah being placed at the finger of a big hand – seemed to be the hand of Dr BR Ambedkar. The post tagged Amit Shah and constitutional architect Dr Ambedkar, giving politically loaded implications for the content consumers.

The post was, notably, shared at a time when a row regarding the Union Home Minister’s controversial remark about Congress’ invocation of Ambedkar’s name in parliaments ignited protest across the country.

Former Rajya Sabha MP, Jawhar Circar congratulated the cartoonist for depicting “how Ambedkar should view Amit Shah after his low insult in parliament.” “Now Mumbai Police have advised X to take this down!! Even State Govts like UP, WB, Maharashtra etc threaten cartoonists — is this democracy?,” Circar wrote in his X handle, sharing the cartoon. MANJUL has been a staunch critic of the ruling dispensation.

However, in the notification, the X platform said that they believe in defending and respecting the voice of their users and that it was their duty to notify that they received a notice from an authorized entity to remove content from the user’s account.

“We understand that receiving this type of notice can be an unsettling experience. While X is not able to provide legal advice, we want you to have the opportunity to evaluate their request, and if you wish, take appropriate action to protect your interest. This may include seeking legal counsel and challenging the request in courts,” the notification further reads.

Resharing his earlier cartoon, MANJUL asked, “Why is the Mumbai police worried about a cartoon?” Users have expressed their support for the cartoonist, with many urging him to fight offering support. A user, Manu, wrote that police have become puppets under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime. “No doubt, the entire Bollywood has turned into a clan of cowards. @Varun_dvn, see God Hanuman in ex-tadipaar of Gujarat,” the user wrote.

Another user, Suhas Palshikar, commented that one only wondered why there was no crackdown on cartoonists so far. “Having silenced the entertainment industry and blunted stand-up comedians, cartoonists couldn’t be far away from the gallows of the regime,” Palshikar penned.
