Outside the morgue of district hospital in Kannur district of Kerala, a dog has been waiting for nearly four months. The hospital authorities could not identify the canine’s owner, but from the constant waiting of the dog outside the morgue has made them draw the conclusion that the owner might be a patient who died in the hospital and was taken to the morgue.
It was Rajesh Kumar K, a hospital attendant who first spotted the dog waiting outside the morgue nearly four months before. Mr. Kumar said they did not pay much attention to the dog on the first day but started noticing it when the dog stayed put for the following days. It was people from the hospital premise that informed him about the story behind the dog’s waiting.
“The dog is usually found on the ramp through which bodies are taken to the mortuary. It cannot go beyond the mortuary gate. The bodies are taken out of the mortuary from the other entrance facing the road. So the dog might be remaining there in the hope that his master will return”, said Mr. Kumar as quoted by Times Of India.
The hospital attendant also remarked that the dog refused to eat in the beginning, but later started accepting biscuits and food items from people. He also added that the dog would often visit the physiotherapy department of the hospital and would return to the morgue at night. “Also the dog doesn’t mingle with stary dogs in the area., and it is particular about its food”, said Mr. Kumar.
Dr, Maya Gopalakrishnan has named the dog Ramu and has been bringing him home-cooked food ever since she came to hear about him the hospital staff. “he eats egg and fish but isn’t fond of rice. We don’t know what the dog’s owners had been feeding him”.
The dog’s story resembles the story of Hachiko, a Japanese Akita dog. He was celebrated as the most loyal dog in the world, as it waited for nine years for his owner without knowing his constant companion has already left the world. Hachiko waited for his owner, Hidesaburo Ueno at the railway station for nine years until he lost his life.
