In their complaint, the parents alleged that Satheesh started physically and mentally abusing Athulya shortly after their marriage, saying that the dowry he received was insufficient. Though the husband admitted abusing her spouse, he said he did not kill her. He said he was outside when Athulya hung to death, and he found his wife dead when he returned to the apartment. Satheesh further claimed that he also tried to commit suicide with the same fan, in a Facebook post.

According to Athulya’s friend, despite her parents asking her daughter to leave her husband and come home, Athulya beat the abuse and stayed with him. The husband, they claim, apologizes to his wife after each harassment, saying he does not remember what happened.

Notably, the incident came barely days after a Kerala woman, Vipanchika Maniyan, was found dead along with her 18-month-old daughter Vaibhavi.
