As relief and rescue operations in Wayanad are progressing, Kerala Chief Secretary Dr. V Venu told the reporters about the biggest challenge rescue teams are facing now. Since the hamlet of Mundakkai has been flattened following a landslide, to cut into the collapsed houses, teams require heavy equipment, and currently they are not in a position to transfer it across the river, the chief secretary said.

Dr. Venu said: “The biggest challenge that the rescue teams have reported is that the hamlet of Mundakkai has been flattened because of huge boulders and trees that have come down as part of landslide. The problem they are facing is to cut into the houses which have collapsed and for that, they need heavy equipment. At the moment, we are not able in a position transfer heavy equipment across the river,” ANI reports.

“We are hoping that the Bailey bridge being built by Indian Army will be completed by tomorrow. There is a possibility that bodies are buried under the mud. Yesterday, we managed to move all the injured found in Mundakkai,” he added.

“At this moment, we are happy with the assistance given by all govt agencies. Today, in the review meeting chaired by CM, NDMA pointed out that they may be in a position to requisition ground penetrating radar that can be mounted on drones,” chief secretary said.
As per the State Revenue Department, the death toll in the tragedy rose to 158, with many injured and still trapped.
