Wayanad Landslides: Rescue Operations Continue On Day 2

At least 185 people have died and around 225 people are still missing after a series of devastating landslides struck Kerala’s Wayanad district, as per Onmanorama. Rescue operations resumed early in the morning a day after massive landslides struck the region. The bodies of 89 victims have been identified while postmortem procedures of 143 dead bodies have been completed so far.

The army has deployed over 200 soldiers from the Defence Security Corps. Reportedly, around 140 personnel are on standby in Thiruvananthapuram in case required. A medical team has also been sent to assist with the rescue operations.

Two helicopters and naval teams from the Air Force were mobilised to assist the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Army yesterday evening.

Kerala Chief Minister stated that 45 camps have been set up in the district with over 3000 people undergoing rehabilitation.

Hundreds of citizens are feared trapped under the debris, while many have been reported to be missing.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ at isolated places in Kerala for the next two days. All educational institutions will remain closed on Wednesday. A holiday has been declared in 11 districts: Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta.

Two massive landslides occurred in Mundakkai and Chooramala areas in the early hours of Tuesday.

The state government has declared a two-day mourning period starting today. “The state government has declared a two-day mourning period starting today, all public functions and celebrations have been postponed,” said CM Pinarayi Vijayan on X.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have postponed their visit to Wayanad to meet the families affected by the tragedy, “… due to incessant rains and adverse weather conditions,” said Rahul on X.
