At least 171 bodies have been recovered, and nearly 186 others have been injured after a series of devastating landslides struck Kerala’s Wayanad district. Reportedly, at least 400 families are stranded, and 98 people are still missing. Rescue operations resumed early in the morning with the army deploying over 200 soldiers from the Defence Security Corps. Around 140 personnel are on standby in Thiruvananthapuram, and a medical team has been sent to assist with the rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha today regarding the Wayanad landslides. He stated that an early warning had been given to the Kerala government on July 23 and again on July 24. Shah pointed out that several states, including Odisha and Gujarat, had previously utilised the Centre’s early warning system to limit damages.

“An early warning was given to Kerala govt on July 23 and again on July 24. Earlier, several states, including Odisha and Gujarat used the Centre’s early warning system to limit damages,” Shah said.

Shah mentioned that nine National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were sent to Kerala in advance, but the Kerala government did not evacuate people in time. He highlighted that India is among four countries capable of providing warnings on natural disasters at least seven days in advance.

He noted that nine NDRF battalions were dispatched to Kerala on July 23, with three more sent on July 30. Shah emphasised that the losses in Wayanad could have been minimized if the Kerala government had become alert following the arrival of the NDRF teams.
