Intense Heatwave: Government Directs Closure Of Educational Institutions In Kerala

Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Amid the severe heatwave continuing in Kerala, the state government has directed the shutting down of educational institutions. The decision was taken in a meeting convened by the Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, to review the ongoing heatwave in the state. The review meeting has further suggested restricting outdoor jobs and activities, Asianet News reports.

Professional colleges, including educational institutions, are asked to remain closed until Monday, May 6, according to the directions. The order also asked to avoid vacation classes between 11 to 3 p.m. and to refrain from summer camps, daytime parades and training.

After the assessment meeting, the Chief Minister appealed to the construction workers, agricultural workers, street vendors, fishermen and other labourers involved in outdoor activities to restructure their timing and to avoid exposure to the sun during the peak hours between 11 to 30 PM.

The Chief Minister further requested to ensure water availability in every remote location. He also warned against fielding animals outdoors during the extreme heat hours.

All discitis except Idukki and Wayanad remain vulnerable to the continuous heatwave in the state as per the weather forecast. More details regarding the comprehensive directions will be announced later.

The review meeting was held following the warning of the acute heatwaves in several districts. Palakkad, which observes the highest temperature, has already ordered the closure of educational institutions till May 2. Several death incidents have also been reported due to the scorching heat in the state.
