Keral court has awarded death penalty to a 28 year old for the brutal rape and murder of a 5 year old girl. The incident happened at Aluva of Ernakulam district in July this year. The accused is identified as Ashfaq Alam, who is a Bihar native belonging to a migrant labourers family from Bihar.
The death sentence was awarded by Ernakulam POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act) Court Judge K Soman and was sentenced within 109 days of the occurrence of the crime. The child went missing on July 28, 2023. She was found strangulated and dumped in Aluva market. The police arrested the accused, who was in a highly inebriated condition, on the same day. The case was termed as ‘rarest of the rare’ and added that the convict does not deserve any sympathy.
According to Live law, the court also took in to account the DNA evidence and the seriousness of the nature of the offense apart from the circumstantial evidence. On November 4th, the court has convicted Ashfaq Alam with all the 16 offenses charged against him which included rape, murder and destruction of evidence. Special Public Prosecutor G Mohanraj has appeared for the prosecution and the case was completed in a record timespan of 26 days from the filing of the chargesheet.
