As the southwest monsoon continues with intensity in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts on Tuesday, July 30. Besides, an orange alert for seven districts and a yellow alert for two districts were also declared.

A red alert have been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, and Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts received orange alert.

Red alert indicate extremely heavy rainfall over 204.4 mm in 24 hours and orange alert signals very heavy rainfall ranging 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours. And a yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

As per reports, very heavy rainfall and gusty surface winds reaching up to 50 km/h are expected at isolated regions in the districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur and moderate rainfall with surface winds of up to 40 km/h in gusts is anticipated at isolated places across all other districts in Kerala.

Meanwhile, heavy rain continue destructions in the hilly areas of Kozhikode and Wayanad. Due to incessant downpours in Kerala, isolated mudslides and tree uprooting have been reported in several areas.

In the last 24 hours, following areas recorded extreme rainfall  in Kerala: Padinjarathara (298 mm),  Cheruvanchery (233 mm), Kollengode (233 mm), Anakkayam (227 mm), Kannur airport (226 mm), Parambikulam (216 mm) and Ayyankunnu (204 mm).

Heavy rainfall has triggered massive landslides in various hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district, killing at least 55 people, including one child, and leaving over 100 people feared to be trapped in the early hours of Tuesday.

As per the local reports, the continuing heavy rainfall in the area is hindering the rescue efforts and many people are suspected to be trapped under the debris.  Besides, the roads from Chooralmala to Mundakkai has been washed away, impeding rescue operations.

The state health department has opened control rooms in the wake of landslides in the district.
