Kerala has recently reported a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases. As per the central government data, there are a total of 949 active cases in the state as of December 13. Meanwhile, there are 1,091 active cases in the country currently. This indicates that the cases from Kerala account for the majority of the COVID-19 cases reported in India. Odisha is in the second position on this list with 53 active cases.
According to a Times of India report, 825 new cases were reported in Kerala in the first eight days of December. Meanwhile, the state had 479 cases in November. India”s overall COVID-19 tally is 4.50 crore, with a death toll of 5,33,308. The report also stated that one patient died in November and two died in December. Notably, the symptoms of infected people last for two months.
Rajagiri Hospital medical superintendent Dr Sunny P Orathel told TOI that COVID-19 cases are detected in patients admitted to the hospital with respiratory symptoms. “In most cases, they test negative for H1N1, but positive for Covid,” TOI quoted Dr Sunny P Orathel as saying. Dr Sunny also added that the symptoms” duration is longer in some patients, and it lasts for a month to two months.
Dr Muhammed Niyas, associate consultant at KIMSHEALTH, Thiruvananthapuram, said to TOI that the current situation is manageable as the infection is not too severe in the majority of the patients. Dr Muhammed Niyas also noted that deaths due to COVID are very few. The Times of India also reported earlier that COVID subvariant JN.1 has been detected in Kerala. JN.1, an Omicron subvariant, was first detected in the United States in September.
