The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to launch air-conditioned sleeper buses on high-demand interstate routes for a comfortable and affordable travel option for long-distance commuters.
According to Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, “The AC sleeper buses will be introduced on high-demand routes like Thalassery-Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram-Bengaluru.” as quoted by The Indian Express.
This move is said to break the monopoly of private operators who charge exorbitant prices for similar services. The KSRTC has already invited tenders for the sleeper buses, which will be launched as soon as they arrive.

The corporation has floated tenders for 34 AC sleeper buses, with specifications that include a 13.5-meter-long, diesel-propelled bus suitable for daily operations of 16 to 20 hours.
The budget allocation of Rs 107 crore for buying new buses has made this initiative possible. As Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar explained, “The budget allocation to buy new buses is a big relief to KSRTC. We’re replacing the old buses, both in the higher class and ordinary categories.” as quoted by The Indian Express.
In addition to the AC sleeper buses, the KSRTC also plans to deploy AC semi-sleeper buses to provide connectivity to airports. These buses will operate from the Kochi airport initially and will be coordinated with flight timings.

As Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar pointed out, “Currently, there is no night connectivity to airports. The KSRTC will operate AC sleeper buses having sufficient luggage space for the benefit of air passengers flying out or arriving on these night flights.” as quoted by The Indian Express.
The corporation will soon place orders for 30 buses with more luggage space, which will be deployed at the Kochi airport. These services will mainly cater to destinations in Malabar and central Kerala.
