MEA Denies Execution Revocation in Nimisha Priya Case: Report

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dispelled reports that the execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya has been stayed, The Hindu reports. This clarification came following an announcement by the office of Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar on Monday (July 28) that an agreement has been reached to revoke Nimisha Priya’s death sentence.

The Malayali Nurse has been awarded death penalty in a murder case in 2020, and her mercy appeals to Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council were rejected in November 2023.

Kanthapuram claimed that an agreement to revoke the death sentence of Nimisha Priya for the alleged murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi was reached in the Houthi militia-controlled Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

Kanthapuram further stated that some crucial decisions were made in the case. The decision was reached during mediation talks that included a Yemeni scholarly delegation appointed by Sheikh Omar Hafeez Thangal at the request of Kanthapuram, as well as rulers of Northern Yemen and international diplomatic officials.

Nimisha Priya was originally scheduled to be executed on July 16 by the Yemen authorities but the death sentence was temporarily postponed, a day earlier through the intervention of the Indian government, and influential religious leader like Kanthapuram.

What Is Nimisha Priya’s Case 

After arriving in Yemen in 2011, Nimisha Priya started a clinic in 2015 under the sponsorship of Talal. Her husband and child returned to India in 2014 due to financial issues. After that, Talal allegedly subjected her to sustained physical and mental after claiming he married her submitting alleged forged documents.

He also  reportedly seized her passport, and extorted money using threats. To escape the harassment, Nimisha tried to drug Talal to take back her passport, but the man died during the attempt.
