Why There Is No Progress In Kochi Teen Mihir's 'Suicide' Case?

Ernakulam, Kerala: ‘Justice for Mihir’ Ahamed, a teenager from Kerala’s Kochi who allegedly died by suicide after suffering extreme ragging from school, continues to evade as no progress has been made in the case yet. Police are yet to register a case over the ragging allegations.

Puthencruz DySP V T Shajan said that they are investigating the complaint. “We have recorded the statements of the accused students, but no evidence has so far emerged to confirm that the alleged ragging took place.” The New Indian Express quoted the officer.

The tragic incident occurred on January 15 as the 15-year-old jumped from the 26th floor of an apartment in Tripunithura. After the incident, Rajna P. M., Mihir’s mother, wrote an open letter accusing schoolmates of extreme ragging against her son. She has also provided digital proof, including the screenshots of conversations between students revealing the crime. Rajna alleged that Mihir was forced to lick a toilet seat and his head was pushed into the toilet while it was flushed, besides verbal and physical abuses.

Ever since the allegations against the Global Public School (GPS), Thiruvaniyoor, where Mihir was studying got surfaced, the school denied the ragging incident. The school authorities have claimed that they have conducted an investigation regarding the incident, adding that the students have submitted written responses denying their involvement in bullying.  The school has also handed over the explanation to the police.

Mihir’s biological father, Shafeeq Madampat, has expressed concern over the investigation. He alleged that there were serious external influences during the initial phase of the probe. He demanded that instead of focusing solely on the ragging allegations, the investigation should also explore all other possible reasons. Shafeeq cast doubt over the police’s reluctance in seizing Mihir’s laptops, tablets, and mobile phone to retrieve his chats and investigate them, the media house reported.

However, Shereef, Mihir’s uncle, said that they hope that all possible angles are examined and that justice is served, adding that they have no complaints about the ongoing investigation. He slammed the school authorities for taking any measures and refusal to acknowledge ragging allegations.

Notably, the report cited an anonymous police officer stating that the preliminary findings suggested the alleged ragging occurred in the first week of December and the boy had seemingly overcome it. The death that occurred in mid-January may due to other factors too.

However, the investigation into the unnatural death is still underway. The delay in the progress is reportedly due to the involvement of the police under two different jurisdictions, as the ragging allegation comes within the jurisdiction of the Puthencruz station under the Ernakulam Rural police, while the unnatural death case comes under the Hill Palace station under the Kochi City police limits.
