Fate can be really cruel sometimes and it turned out to be true to many during the devastating landslides in Wayanad, which washed away an entire town. For  Shruthi from the disaster-hit Meppadi, the misfortune appears to haunt her even after she lost her nine family members, including her father, mother, and younger sister, in the massive landslides on July 30.

The 24-year-old suffered another heart-wrenching tragedy on Wednesday, September 11, when her childhood friend and fiance, 27-year-old Jenson, perished in a road accident.

It was on September 9 Shruthi’s mother’s dead body was identified using DNA tests, as it was among the bodies that were deformed and thus became difficult to recognize. On September 10, Shruti and Jenson visited her mother’s grave at Puthumala, where several unidentifiable bodies and body parts recovered from the landslide were buried, with district authorities assigning specific identification numbers to each grave for the DNA test.

The broken Shruthi had to suffer another tragedy on her way back to Kozhikode when the omni the couple were travelling in met with an accident with a private bus. Her fiance suffered severe injuries and died later while under treatment on ventilator support. Both got engaged in June, and their marriage was planned for December.

For Shruti, who lost her whole family members during the tragedy, Jenson was the sole solace who stayed by her side since the catastrophe hit the family. After the landslides, Jenson, in an interview, had said that he would stay with Shruthi till his last breath, though they have to start from square one, adding that they will live happily.

“I will not leave her alone; I will always hold her close to my heart. Our dream is a house and a job for Shruthi. After my death, she should not be left alone,” The News Minute quoted Jenson. Shruthi too, during the interview, expressed her solace, saying her parents would be in peace, realizing Jenson would be with her.

In a Facebook post, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his sorrow over the heartbreaking tragedy, and penned a note saying that he during his visit to shelter in Meppadi where Wayanad’s landslide victims were being sheltered, he Priyanka and learnt about Sruthi and her enduring strength.

“Despite having suffered the devastating loss of several family members, she remained resilient and brave we were told. Today, I am deeply saddened to learn that she has faced yet another heartbreaking tragedy—the loss of her fiancé, Jenson,” wrote the Congress leader, stressing, not alone in her grief. “My wishes are also with you for a speedy recovery. May you find the strength and courage to carry on with the same unwavering spirit,” he further wrote.
