Secunderabad, popularly known as the twin city of Hyderabad is one of the 17 Lok Sabha constituencies of Telangana. Being an urban constituency, Secunderabad holds notable political significance. Since the beginning of the constituency’s political history, it was a bastion of Congress, with Telangana Praja Samithi (Bharath Rashtra Samithi – BRS) winning the seat once in 1971. But lately, it was a tug of war between BJP and Congress, with the former holding the seat for five times and the latter winning 12 times, including two by-polls.
Since BJP entered into the fray in 1991 in Secunderabad in 1991, the party has won five times and Congress won three times. During the 2014, Lok Sabha election, Bendaru Dattatreya, the current governor of Haryana won the seat by defeating INC’s M. Anjan Kumar Yadav, who won the seat in 2009 general election, over the margin of 2,54,735 votes. In 2019 Lok Sabha election, G Kishan Reddy, who has been long associated with BJP, won the seat by defeating TRS’s (now BRS) Talasani Sai Kiran Yadav, with a majority of 62,114 votes. Congress’ Anjan Kumar Yadav came third during the election, with 1,73,229 votes.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, BJP fielded G Kishan Reddy once again in hoping to win the seat for third consecutive time. Congress fielded Danam Nagender, who came back to Congress earlier this year, after quitting the party in 2018. BRS fielded T Padma Rao Goud, who is currently serving as the second 2nd Deputy Speaker of Telangana Legislative Assembly, and MLA of Secunderabad assembly constituency.
