Congress’ Three-Time Former MP Jai Parkash Vying To Wrest Back Hisar

Written by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Congress has fielded veteran party leader Jai Parkash from Hisar Lok Sabha constituency, from where he was an MP. He is a three-time MP from Hissar and has served as a Cabinet minister in the Chandra Shekhar government at the Centre.

Known as JP, the veteran politician made his electoral debut in 1989 and won Hissar as a Janata Dal candidate. In 1996, he was elected on a Haryana Vikas Party ticket for the second time. Jai Parkash then joined the Congress party and contested the Assembly elections from Barwala constituency, becoming a state legislature. In 2004, on a Congress ticket, he was again elected as an MP from Hissar.

At present, BJP’s Brijendra Singh is representing the constituency after he won the 2019 general election with 3,14,068 votes majority from the then-sitting Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) MP Dushyant Chautala. In recent years, the JJP, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and the BJP have become the major players, pushing the grand old party aside with lesser voter support. Notably, the Congress candidate secured 18 percentage in the last general election, which was better than its 2014 performance when it received a meagre 8 percentage vote share.

As Congress fields a party heavyweight and a member of the Jats community who are the dominant caste in Hisar with one-third of total votes, it expects it can give a tough fight in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections against the other dominant forces. However, the stage has been set for a four-cornered intense battle in the constituency. In a recent election campaign event, Jai Parkash said that the people are fed up with the BJP rule and a Congress wave was sweeping across the country.
