Edited by Shihabudeen Kunju S

According to BJP leader and former Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Janata Dal (Secular) president HD Deve Gowda have finalised a seat sharing deal for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The development, that can hurt Congress’ prospects in electoral gains, came to light after the central government invited Mr Gowda for a G20 Summit dinner in New Delhi. The Congress has recently won a thumbing majority in the state assembly elections. Mr Yediyurappa said both the prime minister and the former prime minister have a deal of four seats now, however, the details of the seats are not clear yet.

“I am happy that Deve Gowda ji met our Prime Minister and they have already finalised about 4 seats. I welcome them…,” the former chief minister said while talking to the media in Bengaluru.

In the May Assembly elections, Congress had won 135 seats out of the total 214 seats. The incumbent BJP was reduced to 66 and JDS won 19 seats. Congress had secured 42.88 per cent vote share while BJP had 36 per cent. JDS recorded 13.29 per cent vote share.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Karnataka had stood firm behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party and delivered 25 out of total 27 seats. Both Congress and JDS had to settle with one seat each. BJP had also bagged a mammoth 51.57 per cent vote share in 2019.
