Locket Chatterjee To Contest On BJP Ticket From Hooghly

Locket Chatterjee will run for the Lok Sabha election from Hooghly on BJP Ticket. The 49-year-old Tollywood actor turned politician has been a Member of Parliament from Hooghly Lok Sabha Constituency since 2019.

She started her political career with AITC but later joined the BJP in 2015. She contested the 2016 State Assembly elections from Mayureshwar but lost to Abhijit Roy of AITC. She is also the General Secretary of BJP, West Bengal, and also is the president of BJP Mahila Morcha in WB. She contested in 2019 from Hooghly”s seat against Ratna De and won with 46.06 percent votes. She was also selected as a member of the standing committee on information technology and also served as a member of the Committee on Empowerment of Women.

Recently, West Bengal police detained BJP MP Locket Chatterjee as the women”s team headed to Sandeshkhali and she was engaged with a police officer in a verbal altercation. The NHRC had earlier issued a notice to the state government and police chief concerning the persisting violence and human rights violations in the area.

Locket Chatterjee had also been part of controversy when addressing a BJP meeting she said, “If any TMC activist slaps you, if he doesn”t want to hear your woes, tie him up with a tree and slap him four to five times,” In the past she had also been in news for drawing parallel between West Bengal and Pakistan, alleging attacks on women and criticizing CM Mamata Banerjee for maintaining silence on the Sandeshkhali violence. Chatterjee also accused Banerjee of minority appeasement and practicing “30% politics,” suggesting minority appeasement. She also termed the anti-CAA protest as a politics of appeasement.

She also took a dig at Trinamool Congress (TMC) and CM Mamata Banerjee over the Sandeshkhali violence and alleged targeting of Hindu women.

In Parliament also she has accused Trinamool leaders of being corrupt by saying that ‘Cut-money’ is accepted by Trinamool leaders.

Reportedly, the host of the popular Bengali TV show Didi No. 1, Rachana Banerjee, has been given a ticket by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from the Hooghly Lok Sabha seat. Locket and Rachana have been colleagues once in the Tollywood industry.
