Looking at his political journey, Dilip Saika showcased his political interest since his student days, as he was involved in student politics and held leadership roles in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), student branch of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Before joining the BJP in 2015, he was the state secretary and state organizing secretary of the ABVP in Assam.
He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Mangaldoi, Assam, demonstrating political aspirations. After coming on top against a strong opponent, he won the state’s key seat for the BJP and he secured 735469 votes defeating Bhubaneswar Kalita of Congress, who secured 596924 votes. Saikia’s career and the BJP’s rising influence in Assam witnessed tremendous change with this victory.
His political career has not been without controversy. Some segments of Assamese society have taken issue with his affiliation with the BJP, especially about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Some people believe that his position on these matters is counterproductive to the interests of the Assamese people.
