TMC candidate Mahua Moitra and BJP’s royal candidate Rajmata Amrita Roy were the two prominent candidates in Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency. Mahua Moitra, a well-known face in West Bengal due to her fiery speeches and sharp criticism of the central government was expected to get a tough fight from the Royal family member due to ‘Rajmata Amrita Roy’s’ focus on BJP core politics of Hindutava and cultural revival. Rajmata also expected to get the support of the Matua community that is seeking citizenship rights under the poll promised CAA.
Krishnanagar constituency, a communist party bastion was taken over by the TMC candidate Tapas Paul in 2009. In 2019, Mahua Moitra secured 6.14 lakh votes by defeating Kalyan Chaubey of BJP. In 2014, TMC’s Tapas Paul secured Krishnangar seat with over 4.38 lakh votes defeating CPI (M) candidate Santanu Jha.
Earlier in Krishnanagar the fight was between CPI (M) and TMC candidates which seems to be driving toward TMC and BJP candidates. In the last general election, the BJP candidate Kalyan Chaubey replaced the CPI (M) candidate from its earlier second position and registered a 13.99% uptick in the total votes.
