Trinamool Congress candidate Abu Taher Khan has won the Lok Sabha Election 2024 from the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency with a total of 1,64,215 vote margin. Md Salim of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was a runner-up candidate from Murshidabad.
Trinamool Congress fielded sitting MP Abu Taher Khan from Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency, known as Beedi hub. Earlier, Abu Taher Khan joined the Congress party in 2001 and won the Naoda parliamentary seat thrice before joining TMC in 2019. Trinamool Congress gave Khan the ticket from Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency. Defeating Abu Hena of the Congress party with over 3.3 Lakh votes, Abu Taher Khan secured the constituency.
As per the 2011 census, the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency has around 68.5 percent Muslim voters, 10.2 percent SC voters, and 1.3 percent ST voters.
In the last assembly elections, Trinamool Congress won all the assembly regions except one to BJP. Earlier, the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency had been a Communist Party of India (CPI) bastion and passed over to Congress from 2004 to 2014. Abu Taher Khan of TMC won the Murshidabad seat in 2019 with an overall 41.57 percent votes. TMC registered an uptick of 19.56% in total vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. BJP candidate Humayun Kabir also added 9.15% votes to the BJP account.
In 2014, CPI (M) candidate Badaruddoza Khan secured the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency seat with nearly 4.2 lakh votes, however, the party registered a dip in its vote share.
