Trinamool Congress candidate Rachna Banerjee has won the Lok Sabha Election 2024 from the Hoogly Lok Sabha constituency with a total of 76,853 vote margin. She defeated the BJP candidate Locket Chatterjee the former MP from the Hoogly constituency.
Locket Chatterjee the BJP candidate for the Lok Sabha election 2024 started her political career with Trinamool Congress but later she joined the BJP in 2015. She is the General Secretary of BJP in West Bengal and is the president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Ms Chaterjee contested the 2016 State Assembly elections from Mayureshwar however she lost the election to TMC’s Abhijit Roy.
The Hoogly Lok Sabha constituency was a Communist stronghold from 1957 till 2009 when the TMC candidate Ratna De won the seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Ratna De secured the Hoogly constituency with an overall 52.37% votes in the 2009 general elections, while the CPI (M) candidate received 42.36% votes. The BJP candidate got 3.42% votes.
In the subsequent election in 2014, TMC candidate Ratna De secured 45.54% and CPI (M) Pradip Saha got 31.52% votes, while the BJP candidate Chandan Mitra received 16.40% votes in the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2019, the tables got turned for the BJP, and Locket Chatterjee the BJP candidate from Hoogly defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Ratna De by securing 46.03% votes. The TMC candidate saw a reduction in vote share and secured only 41% votes, whereas the CPI (M) candidate secured 8.34% votes.
