Written by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Muddahanumegowda who returned to the Congress party has been nominated from the Tumkur Lok Sabha constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Mr Muddahanumegowda joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. However, the former MP from Tumkur got a ticket from the same constituency as he returned to the grand old party. He has completed his B.A. and LL.B education and has worked as an advocate and judge for several years.

Mr Muddahanumegowda had won the 2014 general election against the BJP’s G. S. Basavaraj. Notably the sitting MP was asked to vacate for the JD(S) candidate and former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda following his party’s alliance with Congress in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. But the JD (S)’s H. D. Deve Gowda had lost to the BJP’s G. S. Basavaraj.

Speaking about his defection to the BJP after returning to the Congress party, Mr Muddahanumegowda said that he defected to the BJP with a lot of pain. He also said that his actions had hurt his followers, party workers and leaders and that he apologised to them. He also admitted that he realised his mistake of defecting from a party that gave him political identity.

Mr Muddahanumegowda has served as a district Congress president and has been a two-term MLA from Kunigal seat. The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had said that Mr Muddahanumegowda returned to the Congress party without any preconditions, and whoever the party allotted ticket had to work for the victory of the candidate.

However, with the Mr Muddahanumegowda’s ticket confirmed for the Tumkur Lok Sabha constituency, which he won after defeating the BJP’s G. S. Basavaraj in 2014, the Congress hopes to recapture the seat in the tightly contested Tumkur
