Pushpendra Saroj, the 25-year-old SP candidate, won the Kaushambi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of 1,03,944 votes. Meanwhile, BJP candidate and incumbent MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar came second.
Pushpendra Saroj garnered 5,09,787 votes, whereas Vinod Kumar Sonkar received 4,05,843 votes. The BSP’s Shubh Narayan relegated to the third position with 55,849 votes.
Vinod Kumar Sonkar is the sitting MP of Kaushambi since 2014. He served as the chairperson of the Lok Sabha parliamentary committee on ethics and as a national general secretary of BJP.
Pushpendra Saroj has entered the political fray on a SP ticket. He is the son of the five-time MLA and a former UP cabinet minister Indrajeet Saroj. In 2019 elections, Indrajeet contested from the seat and lost to Vinod Kumar Sonkar.
Pushpendra’s candidacy is a sign that party is favouring young candidates.
Shubh Narayan was the BSP candidate in Kaushambi.
In 2014, Vinod Kumar Sonkar won against SP’s Shailendra Kumar by accumulating 3,31,724 votes whereas SP managed to receive 2,88,824 votes. In 2019, Vinod Kumar Sonkar repeated his victory by receiving 3,83,009 votes. Meanwhile, Indrajeet Saroj, the BSP candidate, received 3,44,287 votes.
