Rajiv Pratap Rudy Aims To Win Saran For The Third Consecutive Term In High Octane Battle

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

In Bihar’s Saran its a battle between two titans. The constituency is going to witness a close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Rajiv Pratap Rudy, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) candidate Rohini Acharya, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter. Rudy is the sitting MP of the Saran constituency and has served the seat for four terms.

From being elected as the member of Bihar legislative assembly on Janata Dal ticket in 1990, Rudy has come a long way in the political arena. Started off as a student leader of the Panjab University to serving as the union minister twice, he groomed himself to climb up the ladder.

Rudy was elected as the member of Bihar legislative assembly at the young age 28. He was elected to the Lok Sabha on BJP ticket in 1996 from the Chapra constituency. Chapra is the former name of Saran. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 1999. He also served as the Minister of State for Commerce, Trade & Industry and subsequently became Civil Aviation Minister with independent charge in the National Democratic Alliance led by the Atal Buhari Vajpayee government.

After winning the Chapra seat twice in 1996 and 1999, Rudy lost it to RJD’s Lalu Prasad Yadav in 2004 and 2009. However, he won back the constituency in 2014 by defeating former Chief Minister of Bihar, Rabri Devi, who is the wife of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav. Since then, the Saran remained his bastion.

In 2021, Rudy was heavily criticised after 30 unused ambulances were found parked at his Amnour Vishw-Prabha community centre, when Bihar was suffering hard from the Covid-19 pandemic.
