Rekha Verma is a sitting MP and BJP candidate representing Uttar Pradesh”s Dhaurahra parliamentary constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. She is also a National Vice President of the BJP.
As the BJP declared the first list of its candidates for the general elections on Saturday, Rekha Verma retained the BJP ticket in the Dhaurahra constituency for the third time. Regarding her candidature, Dhaurahra MP told a local media outlet: “The public accepted me like a daughter.”
Rekha Verma belongs to the Kurmi OBC community. She is a resident of Maqsoodpur village in Block Pasgavan of Lakhimpur Kheri district. She is the first BJP leader from the district to be included in the National Executive Team.
Rekha Verma”s entry into the political arena was in the year 2000 as the Pasgwan block chief. In 2005, she also retained the seat.
After the death of her husband, Arun Verma, in 2013, she contested the Lok Sabha elections from Dhaurahara as a BJP candidate in 2014. In the election, she defeated former Union Minister and now Cabinet Minister Jitin Prasada (earlier a Congress leader and now with the BJP) by a margin of 1,89,363 votes. In 2019, Rekha Verma also defeated Jitin Prasada by a margin of 3,50,049 votes.
Dhaurahra Lok Sabha constituency spreads over Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur districts. The constituency came into existence in 2008 as a part of the implementation of the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. Dhaurahra, with its diverse socio-economic landscape, is known for agriculture and rural character. As Rekha Verma”s popularity among different communities sealed BJP votes twice, will it assure a hat-trick win for the BJP in Dhaurahra?
