Topon Gogoi's Battle Against Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat

Topon Kumar Gogoi, a BJP candidate from the Jorhat constituency of the Assam Lok Sabha elections 2024. Topon Kumar Gogoi the current Member of Parliament of  Assam’s Jorhat constituency is up against Gaurav Gogi of Congress in this election.

He made his political debut in 2016 when he joined the BJP, where he was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly to represent the Sonari constituency under the party. The demonstration of his administrative skills began when he was named as the Minister of State for Power (independent charge) shortly after his entry.

He arrived at the Lok Sabha seat from Jorhat in 2019, a seat that the Congress has historically a stronghold on, and made a dramatic change where he still managed to come out victoriously defeating Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain by over 80,000 votes as he secured over 50% votes, which was the total of 543,288 votes. His triumph over the sitting Congress MP signaled a change in the political climate of the area and cemented the BJP”s hold on Assam as it was previously ruled by Congress for decades.

This Lok Sabha election 2024, will determine the political climate of the constituency since Gaurav Gogoi was forced to move to Jorhat from his traditional seat of Kaliabor after it ceased to exist and a new constituency Kaziranga was created after the delimitation exercise in August last year. Gaurav Gogoi, the youth face of Congress won the Kaliabor constituency of the last election by securing 55.18% of the votes which is a total of 786,092 votes.
