The Congress candidate Ujjwal Raman Singh won the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat by securing 4,62,145 votes. He defeated the BJP candidate Neeraj Tripathi by a margin of 58,795 votes. Neeraj Tripathi has received 4,03,350 votes.
Neeeraj Tripathi, the BJP candidate, is the son of BJP leader and former West Bengal governor Kesari Nath Tripathi. He served as additional advocate general for the Uttar Pradesh government.
Ujjwal Raman Singh is a former SP leader and served as minister in the Uttar Pradesh government. He left SP and joined Congress; All India Congress Committee general secretary (UP in-charge) Avinash Pande inducted Singh into the party fold.
Ujjwal Raman Singh is the son of veteran SP leader and two term Allahabad Lok Sabha MP Rewati Raman Singh. Rewati Raman Singh was the Allahabad MP from 2004 and 2009. Earlier, BJP heavyweight Murali Manohar Joshi contested and elected as the MP from Allahabad.
Meanwhile, BSP placed Ramesh Kumar Patel in the poll fray.
Allahabad witnessed a fierce battle between two stalwarts with significant political lineage.
In 2014, Shyama Charan Gupta got elected by receiving 3,13,772 votes. He defeated Rewati Raman Singh by a margin of 2,51,763 votes. BSP and Congress pushed down to third and fourth place, respectively. In 2019, BJP’s Rita Bahuguna Joshi emerged victorious by garnering 4,94,454 votes against Rajendra Singh Patel, the SP candidate. She won by a margin of 1,83,876 votes.
