Zabed Islam is representing the Assam Gana Parishad of Dubri constituency in the Assam Lok Sabha election 2024. In this election, he is fielded against a triangular battle between Rakhibul Hussain of the Grand Old Party – Congress, and Braduin Ajmal the incumbent minister of AIUDF.
The political career of Zabed Islam took off during his victory in the 2011 Assam Legislative Assembly election, where he secured victory as an independent candidate from the Mankachar constituency of Assam. Later he aligned himself with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a prominent regional political party.
He set his path with the AGP party during the 2019 Lok Sabha election where he was chosen to represent the party in the Dhubri constituency. But the results of the 2019 election didn’t turn up to his expectations, since he secured 3,99,733 votes and was defeated by Badruddin Ajmal of AIUDF who won victoriously securing 718,764.
Through this election, he has declared his battle once again with the current incumbent minister Badruddin Ajmal of AIUDF and the field is witnessing the entry of another opponent Rakibul Hussain of Congress. At present, he serves as the Chairperson of Assam Minorities Development and Finance Corporation Ltd.
Dhubri is a Muslim-majority constituency in Assam, with 55 percent of them making up the constituency’s total demography. The constituency has 40 percent Hindus and 5 percent voters belonging to other religious groups. The electorate comprises of 89 percent voters from rural areas and 11 percent of them from urban areas. The constituency has a 3.5 percent population of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and a 5.7 percent population of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
