A huge crowd of job seekers turned up for a walk-in interview at Air India Airport Services Ltd which led to a stampede-like situation in Mumbai’s Kalina on Tuesday.
Videos of the crowd and the chaotic scene are going on rounds on social media platforms. The company had kept walk-in interviews for 2,216 vacancies for the post of handyman, a person who performs various repairs and maintenance tasks.

Visuals showed that the applicants jostling with each other to reach the form counters. As per the report, the applicants had to wait for hours without food and water which made many of them feel unwell.
The salary of airport loaders ranges between ₹ 20,000 to ₹ 25,000 a month, but most makeover ₹ 30,000 after overtime allowances. Educational criteria for the job are basic, but the candidate must be physically strong.
The chaotic scene led the authorities to intervene. As the crowd started to become unmanageable, it forced the organisation to change its approach and asked the applicants to leave their CVs and vacate the premises to restore order.
Air India Airport Services Ltd has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident and the next steps for the recruitment process.
Among the aspirants is Prathameshwar from Buldhana district, who has traveled over 400 km for the interview. “I have come to apply for the post of handyman. They are offering a salary of ₹ 22,500,” he said. Prathameshwar is a second-year BBA student. Asked if he would quit his studies if he gets the job, he replied, “What do we do? There is so much unemployment. I urge the government to create more job opportunities,” reports NDTV.

The Mumbai incident has come just days after a similar incident that took place in Gujarat’s Bharuch where hundreds of people turned up for a job interview organized by chemical firm Thermax Company for just 10 vacant positions.
