Differences Shadow Christmas Celebrations Across The Country; Modi Attempts Message Of Unity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a message of harmony and unity as he joined the Christmas morning service at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption in New Delhi. PM Modi sent wishes on the occasion of Christmas Day of ‘renewed hope, warmth and a shared commitment to kindness’.

Whereas on one hand the leader of the country gives a message of unity, on the other hand, incidents of vandalism and attempts to destroy the Christmas celebration have been recorded at several places in India. The members of Bajrang Dal and other Hindu affiliations turned the Christmas celebrations into chaos.

In one of the reported incidents at Raipur, the Bajrang Dal members vandalised the Christmas decorations at a mall and destroyed the property.

In another similar incident, Bajrang Dal activists gathered in front of the St. Alphonsus Cathedral Church, recited Hanuman Chalisa, and staged a protest targeting Christian missionaries.

In Charummoodu, Karimulakkal, Kerala, a peaceful Christmas carol with women and children was brutally attacked using deadly weapons. Reportedly, the violence erupted between the two opposing groups, ‘Yuva’ and ‘Liberty’, in the carol, led by a gang linked to communist leader Shyam Lal.

As per the CPM mouthpiece Deshbhimani, some Hindu right-wing-run schools and those with Hindu management also decided not to hold Christmas programmes. However, the Kerala education minister warned that the government will not tolerate any divisive politics based on religion and belief.
