Gukesh Dommaraju, the young Indian chess sensation is set to make history as he takes on the reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the World Chess Championship from November 25 to December 12 in Singapore.
Though chess isn’t a sport of the masses, particularly in Singapore, it is still considered a significant event. For the first time in 45 years, the world championship has come to south-east Asia, after the 1979 edition. Apart from that, it is the first time, the world championship will be contested between two Asian players.

The 18-year-old Indian prodigy has been in a pretty rampaging touch while Ding hasn’t had a classical win in over 300 days. And it is the first time, an Indian other than Vishwanathan Anand will be featured in the title match. Ten years ago, Anand who had won the world title five times, played the World Championship match for the last time, losing to Magnus Carlsen in Sochi, Russia.
Gukesh’s journey to this stage has been extraordinary, defined by resilience, determination, and a series of remarkable performances.
Gukesh will face Ding Liren, who became champion in 2022 after Magnus Carlsen stepped down. Ding has faced challenges in maintaining dominance, while Gukesh enters the championship with growing confidence, having previously defeated both Ding and Carlsen in freestyle formats like Fischer Random Chess.
Gukesh shared his thoughts on Ding Liren’s approach to the game, highlighting his adaptability skills. He said, “I think Ding is quite universal. Almost all the players at the top level have to be universal at this point. So there are minute differences between all the players, and I’m trying my best to analyze them and use them to my advantage”.
