Mumbai BMW Hit-And-Run: Accused Admits To Driving; Claims Was Not Drunk

A day after the Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah’s son Mihir Shah’s arrest in the Mumbai BMW hit and run case, the accused today admitted to driving the luxury car when it rammed the bike, leading to the killing of a woman. However,  Mihir Shah has claimed that he was not drunk while driving the car, NDTV reports.

After the accused’s arrest, a Mumbai court had extended his police custody till July 11. In addition to the 24-year-old Mihir Shah, police have arrested 12 other persons in connection with the incident.  Mihir Shah’s mother and sisters have been questioned by the police since the cop believed they helped the accused in his absconding leading to the delay in the arrest.

Noting that the arrest was made three days after the accident, former home minister Anil Deshmukh on Tuesday stated that blood samples should have been taken within five to six hours of the incident to ascertain whether he was drunk while driving the BMW when the accident happened. It is alleged that when the accident happened, Mihir Shah was driving the car after spending around Rs 18,730 at a Juhu bar, where he along with his friends have a party for hours.

Police had formed multiple team to track down the accused following the accident, and they finally nabbed him from an apartment in Virar, which is around 65 km from Mumbai. The police has booked a case under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The 45-year-old woman, Kaveri Nakhwa died when the couple’s bike was hit by the speeding BMW on Dr Annie Besant Road, with both landing on the car’s bonnet. The vehicle still accelerated, dragging the woman up to 1.5 kilometers. The injured husband could not find his wife when he searched for her after the tragedy as she was around two kilometers away from the spot.

The car was registered under  Shiv Sena leader (Shinde faction) Rajesh Shah’s name, the accused’s father and the car’s insurance expired in May.
