In a digital age dominated by fleeting trends and endless scrolling, one video has emerged to captivate netizens across the globe. Meet Luang Pho Yai, the 109-year-old Thai Buddhist monk whose skeletal appearance has sparked a viral sensation unlike any other.

The Buddhist monk became an internet sensation when his granddaughter, Auy Auyaray, started sharing his videos on her TikTok account. The initial videos began when she started documenting his life when he was admitted to the hospital after suffering from a hip injury in January. Her TikTok updates kept netizens updated as his health began improving. However, it was one specific video where the monk can be seen interacting with his great granddaughter that went viral, garnering 132.3 million views.

Once again, one of the videos of the monk has gone viral. This time on X (formerly known as Twitter), the video has gained 24.9 million views.

Sadly, last year, on March 22, Luang Pho Yai passed away at the age of 109. Auy Auyaray shared videos and images of the monk’s memorial and funeral ceremonies.

However, the Thai monk’s videos are still generating millions of views and likes. The viral video has also opened the doors to rumours and tasteless jokes about the physical appearance of the monk. There have also been posts sharing the video with false claims, including that the monk was a 399-year-old woman and that he was undergoing the Japanese practice of sokushinbutsu, a process of self-mummification. The granddaughter has denied all rumours and requested that netizens be respectful rather than make jokes.
