Babar Azam Resigns As Pakistan Limited-Overs Captain

Months after Pakistan’s debacle in the T20 World Cup 2024, Babar Azam resigned as the limited-overs captain on Wednesday.

Pakistan registered one of their worst performance in the marquee event, losing to the hosts United States in a Super-Over thriller before registering their second-consecutive loss to their arch-rivals Team India, to exit the Group Stage.

It marked another series of poor performance in the limited-overs under Azam’s captaincy after Pakistan registered a group-stage exit in the 2023 ODI World Cup and he was subsequently removed from the role. Before being reappointed to the role in March 2024.

“Dear Fans, I’m sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month.,” Babar wrote on X.

“It’s been an honour to lead this team, but it’s time for me to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been a rewarding experience, but it’s added a significant workload. I want to prioritise my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy.

“By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth. I’m grateful for your unwavering support and belief in me. Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player. Thank you for your love and support.”

There are doubts about who will lead Pakistan after Azam quit his position. Premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as Pakistan’s T20 captain after Azam was initially removed from the role. But he failed to impress and was unceremoniously removed from the position.

Pakistan’s next limited-overs tour will include three ODIs and as many T20Is during their tour to Australia.
