BCCI Appoints Gautam Gambhir As Team India Head Coach

The Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed former India opener Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of Team India. BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah took to X to announce the appointment. He showed faith in the 2011 World Cup winner’s clear vision and vast experience.

Gambhir’s appointment as the Team India head coach comes after he guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 triumph as a mentor. Under his mentorship, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) qualified for the playoffs during the initial two seasons. This will be his first stint as a full-time coach.

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward,” Shah announced on X.

“His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey,” he added.

The Delhi native gave his interview as Team India head coach along with former India women’s coach W.V Raman. He was the first choice for the role.

Gambhir will assume his position during Team India’s tour of Sri Lanka, slated to get underway on July 27. The first major assignment for the newly appointed Team India head coach will be the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 which will be followed by the T20 World Cup in 2026 where the national team will defend their title.

“India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true! 🇮🇳,” Gambhir said on the appointment.
