Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla on Friday officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The veteran cricketer was part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squads. The 36-year-old shared an Instagram post announcing retirement from his cricket journey that spanned over two decades.

In his post, Chawla says cricket gave him everything, while bidding adieu to the game after more than 20 years of playing professionally. “Every moment on this incredible journey has been nothing short of a blessing,” Chawla notes.

“Cricket will always live within me. I now look forward to embarking on a new journey, carrying with me the spirit and lessons of this beautiful game,” the player wrote on Instagram.

Chawla represented India in three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is, taking 43 wickets across all three formats of the game. In test cricket, Chawla played three matches and picked up seven wickets. In ODIs, Chawla featured in 25 games, bagging 32 wickets with best figures of 4/23. He also played seven T20Is for India, claiming four wickets.

He has been a major part of the Indian Premier League, featuring for the Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians over the years. He called the IPL a “truly special chapter” in his career while expressing gratitude to the franchises for trusting in his abilities and providing him with opportunities to perform.

He also acknowledged the league’s role in helping him evolve both as a cricketer and as a person, paving the way for his rise to become one of the tournament’s most dependable spinners. Across 181 matches, Chawla took 179 wickets, making him one of the top wicket-takers in IPL history.
