At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Indian contingent comprising 78 athletes and officials made its grand entrance at the Parade of Nations on the River Seine during the opening ceremony on Friday.

For the ceremony, renowned designer Tarun Tahiliani designed the outfits for the Indian athlete highlighting the Indian heritage on the global stage. The male athletes wore a white kurta crafted from natural fabrics and Bandi jacket adorned with orange and green naksi work. The attire was designed with an Indian tricolor. The female athletes donned ikat-inspired sarees in the tri-colours of white, orange, and green, complemented by orange and green borders and blouses, and was paired with sneakers.

However, the outfits of the Indian athletes faced heavy criticism online for their lack of quality and creativity. Critics expressed their disappointment with what they perceive as subpar designs.

One user wrote, “Hello Tarun Tahiliani! I have seen better Sarees sold in Mumbai streets for Rs.200 than these ceremonial uniforms you’ve ‘designed’. Cheap polyester like fabric, Ikat PRINT (!!!), tricolors thrown together with no imagination Did you outsource it to an intern or come up with it in the last 3 minutes before the deadline? Such a disgrace to the rich weaving culture and history of India.”

In contrast, the wedding of Anant and Radhika Merchant has featured a range of extravagant outfits designed by Tarun, including the outfit of Kim Kardashian.

Netizens thus compared this with the Olympics attire. One of among the users wrote, “Indian team’s official attire looks inspired from the Ambani Wedding hospitality team. Bravo #TarunTahiliani.”

“Given our country’s rich heritage of fabrics and craftsmanship, this effort is both pathetic and embarrassing. The tacky stitched-on shoulder patch only adds to the disappointment,” another added.

A further comment on X read, “At world’s fashion capital, an Indian athlete looked like this – dull and ordinary. Tarun Tahiliani’s mix of plastic-sheet-like saree, printed ikat and unimaginative use of tricolour, shut window to splendrous world of Indian textiles”.
