Ahead of India’s match against Sri Lanka on November 2 at the Wankhede Stadium, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that there wont be any firework display in Mumbai and Delhi.
By taking into account of the Bombay High court’s note on Mumbai’s worsening air quality, the fireworks were cancelled considering it may add to the pollution level.
India after facing Sri Lanka, will play against Bangladesh at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi next Monday. He added that the board has committed to combat environmental issues and will always place the interest of fans and stakeholders at the forefront, while speaking to the Indian Express.
He further added that BCCI acknowledged the urgent concern surrounding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi. And they strive to host the ICC World Cup in a manner befitting the celebration of the cricket. And he also said that they remain steadfast in their commitment to prioritise the health and safety of stakeholders.
As per the report of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall AQI (Air Quality Index) reading in Mumbai Tuesday was a moderate 172. While in Delhi, the air quality in October has been recorded worse since 2020, reports Indian express.
While a senior BCCI official said that by taking such decisions, the cricket board is making a strong statement. He also added that this will increases the public awareness among citizens. “This was a way of setting an example and bringing a significant societal change,” he said.
Very recently, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma too raised the issue of air quality in Mumbai by taking it into his Instagram story. Sharing his concern, Sharma posted an image depicting the alarming situation of Mumbai.
