Tania Sachdev, India’s celebrated chess player and Woman Grandmaster, has expressed disappointment over the Delhi government’s lack of recognition for her achievements in chess. Taking to social media, Sachdev voiced her frustration, stating, “Having played for India since 2008, it’s disheartening to see a lack of recognition from the Delhi government for achievements in chess. States that support and celebrate their champions directly inspire excellence and motivate talent. Sadly, Delhi has yet to take this step.”
Referring to her recent accolades, Sachdev highlighted her contributions, including the historic team bronze and individual medal at the 2022 Chess Olympiad, followed by India’s gold medal at the 2024 Chess Olympiad. Despite these significant accomplishments, she lamented the absence of acknowledgment or support from her home state. She further called on Chief Minister Atishi and Aam Aadmi Party leaders to recognise and support Delhi’s chess athletes.

Responding promptly, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi assured Sachdev of her government’s commitment to athletes. “Hi Tania, we have always supported all our athletes, sportsmen, and sportswomen, especially in our schools. Would love to meet you and understand what more can be done, especially for chess players. My office will reach out to you, and I am really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions,” Atishi said.
Sachdev, an iconic figure in Indian chess, began her journey at the age of six. Over the years, she has earned numerous accolades, including national championships, Commonwealth and Asian Games medals, and team bronze medals at the Chess Olympiad in 2012 and 2022. As a charismatic ambassador for the game, she has also used her platform to inspire budding talent and advocate for greater recognition of chess in India.
