Indian chess grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa went down valiantly after fighting game”s great Magnus Carlsen. Praggnanandhaa held his own against Carlsen in the first two classical games, but the world champion was a class apart in the tie-breaker. Magnus Carlsen added one more prestigious trophy to his collection in his victory in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Commenting on Praggnanandhaa”s performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the chess player showcased exceptional skills and gave a tough fight to the formidable Magnus Carlsen in the finals. “This is no small feat. I wish him the very best for his upcoming tournaments,” PM Modi said in an X (formerly Twitter) post.

On his way to the Chess World Cup final, Praggnanandhaa beat, among others, world number two Hikaru Nakamura and number three Fabiano Caruana. By winning the silver medal in the event, Praggnanandhaa also secured a ticket to the FIDE Candidates Tournament.

He became the second Indian to reach the semi finals and final of the tournament after Vishy Anand.
