'Slow And Low Turn' Expected From Black-Soil Pitch For Kanpur Test

When India and Bangladesh lock horns for the second Test in Kanpur, starting Friday, there will be uncertainty over the pitch and weather.

The curators at the Green Park Stadium have prepared two black-soiled pitches with no indication about which one will be used. Moreover, the Asian teams will be welcomed to an overcast situation with batters expected to have their say early in the match. However, as the match progresses, the pitch will turn slow and low, tempting both sides to opt for an extra spinner.

On the eve of the final Test, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir and his assistant Abhishek Nayar had a close look at the surface. One of the two pitches prepared for the match looked drier.

“To be honest, I don’t know which surface we are going to play on yet,” India batting coach Abhishek Nayar said on Thursday afternoon.

“Yes I had a look at (the pitch),” Hathurusinghe had said, “But the groundsman has prepared two pitches. We don’t know on which we will play on. Tomorrow we will find out.”

Rain affected India’s final training session but the groundsmen were quick to get off their blocks to get the square covered.

Due to no clarity on the pitch to be used, Team India are yet to finalise their playing XI, mulling over the choice of an extra spinner or seamer.

The hosts will be keen to clinch all 12 points at stake for the Kanpur Test and consolidate their position at the World Test Championships table.
