Vinesh Phogat Case: Wrestling Rule ‘Loophole’ May Turn The Tide

Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against the disqualification case at the Paris Olympics will find a resolution on Tuesday. The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has completed its hearing and is ready to deliver the verdict.

As per the latest development in the case, the United World Wrestling (UWW) opposes Vinesh’s plea. As the Olympic Games concluded on Sunday, Vinesh was seen leaving the Olympic Games Village in Paris.

The deadline for the verdict of the case of the Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is 9:30 PM(IST) on August 13.

Boria Majumdar, an Indian sports journalist stated that a person who plays the repechage is the one who looses to the finalist. In Vinesh’s case, the Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki was allowed to compete as the repechage. However, the UWW had expunged Vinesh Phogat and was placed last in the event.

Following her disqualification, Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez played in the finals against US wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt. Thus allowing Susaki to compete as the repechage is contrary to the UWW ruling. Instead of Susaki, Guzman Lopez’s repechage should have played the bronze medal match. “So, how come Susaki was allowed to fight repechage and not someone who lost to the Cuban who replaced Vinesh in the final? Can India exploit the loophole?” he asked.

As of now, it is said that if Vinesh loses the case, she will appeal to the higher court, and if UWW loses, it’s vice versa.

If the ruling favors Vinesh, UWW will have to change its existing rules.

The 29-year-old’s legal team has French lawyers Joelle Monlouis, Estelle Ivanova, Habbine Estelle Kim, and Charles Amson. In addition, senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania were also included in the team.

The Indian wrestler has made two appeals, one regarding the ineligibility for the Olympic gold medal match, and the second one was to be considered for a joint-silver medal.

CAS rejected the first appeal and accepted the second one.

Vinesh Phogat who stormed into the finals on last Tuesday, was debarred from the gold medal bout following a marginal weight gain during the customary morning weigh-in.

Vinesh appealed against the UWW decision arguing that she be given a joint silver with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had earlier lost to Vinesh in the semi-finals and was promoted to the final.
