Sportspersons across the globe participating in the much-revered Paris Olympics 2024 have a difficult time managing stress and the pressures of representing their country, winning a medal, and making their country proud. After immense hard work, strict regimen, and a disciplined life, they become one of the best in sports and hope to win an Olympic medal and create history.

South Korean archers have dominated archery in the Paris Olympics this year, with a trio of Kim Je-deok, Kim Woo-jin, and Lee Woo-seok winning gold by defeating France. But during the semi-final match against China, an unexpected and formidable opponent challenged Kim Je-deok.

While the first set ended up in a tie at 54 points, the South Korean team won the second set with 57 points while China secured 53. The third set began, and with the score at 36-53 and two arrows remaining, Kim Je-deok stepped up.

As Kim Je-deok took aim at the target, a bee began buzzing around him and landed on the back of his hand. An Olympic heart rate monitor showed his pulse remained steady at 80 beats per minute (the normal resting heart rate). Unaffected, the expert archer maintained his calm and shot a perfect arrow despite the challenge.

With another 10 points won by teammate Kim Woo-jin, the archers won the gold medal, marking their third consecutive victory in the Olympics.

“I shooed it away but it followed me. When it landed on my hand, I reminded myself, ‘This is the Olympics,’ and I couldn’t lower my arms. I had a strong determination to shoot,” said Kim Je-deok during a press interview, as quoted by The Korea Herald.

Clips of the incident went viral, with many marvelling at the 17-year-old archer’s calmness and determination. Notably, he won gold medals in the men’s team and mixed events at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, becoming the youngest Korean male archery gold medalist. This is his third gold medal.
