Mohammed Shami’s outstanding performance in the match against New Zealand played a crucial role in India winning semi-final match. An impressive seven wicket haul in the semi-final and setting a new record by an Indian bowler in a world cup match… what more is needed to make the day more incredible for the fast-bowler.

Shami’s world cup success is something which will be remembered in the history of cricket. The ‘fire-man’ wasn’t part of the team in the first three matches of the series. He was given a chance when Hardika Pandya got ruled out of the games due to an injury and the rest was simply magical for Shami.

But the much-celebrated player of the tournament had to face some harsh comments from the netizens when he missed a crucial catch off Kane Williamson, denying Jasprit Bumrah a potential wicket.

Mohammed Shami had to go through some rough roads in his career in the past. One among such bitter memories happened during the T20 World Cup 2021 match against Pakistan. The cricketer was brutally trolled and had to face online abuse in the name of his religion. In the unfortunate game, the fast-bowler failed to defend 151 runs and lost the game for ten wickets. All the players of India, including the then captain Virat Kohli had to face abuses from netizens. But Shami faced the worst as few even said to leave the country. While Virat Kohli said after the incident that the whole team stands behind Shami and he added, “To me attacking someone over their religion is the most, I would say, pathetic thing that a human being can do. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion and what they feel about certain situations, but I personally have never ever even thought of discriminating [against] anyone over their religion. That is a very sacred and personal thing to every human being and that should be left there.”

Shami has now answered to all critics with his stupendous performance in the tournament. Indian cricket team was led by legends like Mushtaq Ali, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Mohammed Azharuddeen, but none faced such discrimination on the grounds on the basis of religion when they failed to meet the expectation of the fans.

The one who was trolled has now become a stellar cricketer. Though he haven”t done much white ball cricketing in his career, Shami has in total about 54 victims to his name. The fire in his belly was never extinguished. The burning desire prevailed. He took disappointment in his stride and proved that detractors can be shoved off not by words but by some eye dropping cricketing actions.
